Pros
- Extremely affectionate and loyal little dogs
- Very intelligent Dachshunds learn quickly and know how to please
- Fun-loving and playful by nature
- Are known to be real clowns when the mood takes them
- Energetic and feisty Dachshunds like to be kept entertained
- Low maintenance on all fronts
Cons
- Not the best choice for first time owners because Dachshunds often have a mind of their own
- Can be a little harder to housetrain
- Dachshunds can be stubborn at times
- Care must be taken with puppies because they must not be allowed to jump up or down from anywhere because it could damage their backs and joints
- They are prone to putting on too much weight if not given enough daily exercise
- Although intelligent Dachshunds can be wilful when it comes to training which includes housetraining them
- Can be over-protective if not well socialised from a young age
- If not taught from an early age not to bark unnecessarily they can grow up to be excessive barkers
- The breed is known to suffer from quite a few health concerns so vet bills can be high and why pet insurance is so important for anyone owning a Dachshund

Child Friendly ⭐⭐
Not Good with Kids: In isolation, this dog breed might not be the best option for kids. However, to mitigate the risks, have the puppy grow up with kids and provide it with plenty of pleasant and relaxed experiences with them. This breed is also shy toward other pets and shy toward strangers.
Dog Friendly ⭐⭐
Exercise Needs ⭐⭐⭐
These are active dogs with surprising stamina; they need to be walked daily. They will also enjoy sessions of play in the park or other safe, open areas. Be careful, however, when pedestrians are about because Dachshunds are more likely to be stepped on than more visible dogs. They should be discouraged from jumping, as they are prone to spinal damage.
